Application of Silica Sol in Silicon Steel Coatings
Grain-oriented silicon steel is an important soft magnetic material widely used in the power and electronics industries. It boasts excellent properties, including high magnetic flux density and low iron loss, and is primarily employed as the core material for transformers and other electrical machinery. In the manufacturing process, the surface of grain-oriented silicon steel must undergo an insulating coating treatment. This insulating coating protects the silicon steel sheets from corrosion and rust during storage, transportation, and use, increases the surface resistivity, and reduces eddy-current losses in the grain-oriented silicon steel.
Silica sol applied as foliar silicon fertilizer
In recent years, water-soluble silicon fertilizers have seen rapid development. Most of the currently available water-soluble silicon fertilizers are made from water glass (sodium silicate or potassium silicate) and are applied via foliar spraying. However, water glass as a silicon fertilizer has a significant drawback: it is highly alkaline, and improper use can easily lead to seedling burn and other damage. When used, it must be diluted thousands of times, which greatly reduces the effective silicon content in the dilution solution. Moreover, it cannot be mixed with other fertilizers, especially nitrogen fertilizers, thereby limiting the scope of its application. Consequently, the development of silicon sol-based silicon fertilizers has gradually emerged as a new technology for foliar silicon fertilizer applications. Silicon sol-based silicon fertilizers boast excellent characteristics, including high silicon nutrient content, a wide pH tolerance range (pH = 2–10), absence of harmful sodium ions, and the ability to be mixed with nitrogen fertilizers such as urea.
Factors Affecting the Stability of Silica Sol
Silica sol can maintain suspension stability for a long time, but in real-world environments, many factors can still affect its stability. In particular, during storage, certain precautions must be taken; otherwise, irreversible damage may occur.
